Make money at home as an entrepreneur selling bird related products such as birdfeeders, bird baths, roost boxes, and birdhouses. Make money selling plants to attact the birds to backyards. The Bird Calls
When we finally arrive back home each night we plop down in front of the T.V. to watch conflict on the news or various TV shows. We should be watching the silly antics of the birds and squirrels right outside our windows. The kids put on headphones and tune us and the world out. As their hearing deteriorates, so does their ability to hear to soft sweet songs of the birds. For entertainment, they play video games, locked inside their bedrooms, snacking on unhealthy foods, and not getting enough exercise. Their ears must be retrained to hear the sounds of the birds which is so different from the sounds of loud music, video games, and the T.V. The birds call us outside into the fresh air and sunshine, to exercise, and to relax. They call to relieve stress in their environment. They call us to unselfishness and responsibility as we respond to their needs. They call us to mental alertness as we memorize their names, features, songs, and calls. They call us away from negative things such as despair. They give us hope and peace. The birds call to us. They have something to say and we must listen. Wild birds live outside. To study birds, you have to get out of the house and into your big yard. Turn off the television. Learn to identify your local birds by sight and sound. Learn which birds migrate (and when) over your house. Figure out what to feed them and what kind of proper housing to provide them. Increase your vocabulary. Learn some bird words. Find special places to go to study birds. An early interest can lead to a great lifelong career. Consider a career in ornithology! Ornithology is the branch of zoology that deals with the study of birds. Maybe specialize in just one kind of birds. For example, here is a site just about finches. You can research each individual bird and find out where you want to find your niche. Birds are fun to watch and you can do so up close if you provide birds with a window feeder. Sit really still outside and enjoy their beauty as they feed. You will find it relaxing and comforting. It takes time to learn how to sit still and quiet. There is a big transition to make from the busy world of work and school to the quiet world of birds and contemplation. All you need to get started is a comfortable chair. After you get used to the idea that you really want to learn about the bird world, you will need to begin your study right away. You, too, can become a birdbrain. Make and Sell Birdhouses (Nest Boxes) Build birdhouses to correct ornithology standards. Check out our article about bird-specific birdhouses. Make certain there are no perches outside the hole. Make certain that the hole sizes are correct to the species of bird you are trying to attract. Give instructions with every birdhouse you sell so your customers know to clean out the nests when the birds have moved on. Need a box to wrap a gift in? A birdhouse is the perfect solution. Fill it full of all kinds of goodies as well as your present. The recipent gets two for one. Sell Birdbaths As long as the dish is shallow, anything goes. Be creative in what you use and design. Set them on pedestals. Some birds like to use birdbaths on the ground if they feel safe. When you sell birdbaths make certain you include instructions. There is more to a birdbath than just filling it with water and setting it down somewhere. Birds take baths because they get dirty, just like people. They need to keep their feathers clean and flexible with no dirty buildup. They cool off in the summer in a birdbath. They need water as much as food all year long. Make certain that your birdbath is shallow – about three inches or so. If it is too deep, add pebbles, rocks, or decorative rocks. Birds want a solid and secure footing so make certain that the bottom is textured. Add a dripper to the birdbath because the moving water attracts more birds. Shallow fountains are good, too. Place the birdbath near trees and shrubs for security. Birds feel vulnerable in open spaces and do not fly well with wet, soggy wings. Place a birdbath on top of a pedestal or hang it from a tree. Some birds like water on the ground and will bathe in a birdbath on the ground, in a shallow pond, or a shallow stream. Protect them from predators. Keep it clean and filled every day. Dump out the water, hose it down, and refill it with fresh water. You should do this meticulously every day as you want the water as fresh as possible for drinking and bathing. Remember birds do both in the same birdbath. In the summer, water evaporates quickly and you must establish a daily routine of caring for your birds. Every few days, completely remove all the water, algae, feathers, droppings, and mineral deposits. This will keep mosquitoes from breeding in your birdbath, too. Wipe clean, and fill with fresh water. Once a week clean with a mild kitchen soap and hot water. Never use harsh chemicals or bleach as the residue can harm your birdies. Even with a mild soap, you still want to rinse and dry thoroughly as even a mild detergent can harm your birds. Birds need water in winter as much as in the summer. If you live in the colder climates, consider a heater or a heated birdbath. Keep that water clean and your birds pretty. Throw in a bird bath towel for fun and good measure for your customers. Make Money Taking Care of Birdhouses in the Neighborhood
Hire yourself out to your neighbors to make certain that the birdfeeders are clean and the seeds are fresh and not moldy. Clean birdhouses in the spring. Many neighbors may not have considered putting up a bird feeder because it is just so much trouble. If someone (you) could keep them filled and clean, your neighbors could experience the joy of birding. Make Time for Charity Many older residents would love to have birdhouses and feeders. Many shut-ins are unable to keep them clean or filled with food. This you do for free. Get other neighbors involved in this free community project. After bad weather, the feeders need to be cleaned and filled with fresh food. Place the feeders and houses near a window so they can be easily seen. See our page about charity for more ideas for giving. See what Dean Birder does. Teach Others What You Know
Give speeches, for a fee of course. You will stand at a podium in the shape of a giant birdhouse. Put some twigs sticking out of the hole with a little stuffed bird toy peeking out. Make a PowerPoint show with pictures of individual birds and get the audience to name the birds. Give instructions as to how to care for the birds in your neck of the woods. Tell what birds live in your area all year long and which birds migrate through your area. See if your audience can recognize bird calls and songs. Make a meaningful presentation, plug adopt-a-bird programs, and sell your products at the end of the speech. Sell Bird Games
Draw birds on cards with the name on the back so that kids (and adults) can recognize birds by their picture and make another flash card set with just the silhouettes of birds. Learn to identfy birds both ways. Sell recordings of bird sounds for recognition. Play sound, give a moment for listener to guess the bird, then give answer before moving on to the next one. © Backyard EntrepreneurTM 2007Links to us.
