 Worm Farmer

The early bird gets the worm

Make money at home as a worm farmer.

Sell Worms and Castings

There's money in your big backyard, but you have to get out of the house and get started in worm production. Red Wigglers (Eisenia fetida), that is.  These are the compositng kind.  You will find this a rewarding and profitable career.  It costs so little to get started.  All the space you need is a garage, basement, space under your bed, or just a backyard.  A shed will help make this a year long operation if your weather is not 55 - 85 degrees all year long.

You need small dark bins for storage, some soil, shredded newspapers, and food scrapes.  We have listed many resources below that will give you the exact details you need to get started.

You will need a catchiny name for your worm farm to get folks attention. Farms have names.

Go Green with Worms

Artificial fertilizers add mostly nitrogen, phosphorous, and potash to the soil.  Top soil is not produced because the soil is too acidic to support life.  Living organism such as worms create topsoil.  Check out your soil.  Chances are you will not find a single worm.  Or very few. If a worm cannot live in the soil, the soil is also not good enough to support a lawn, plants, or garden crops.

This is where you come in.  You will sell Red Wiggler worms and educate your customers about the value of adding worms to their soil.  Sell the worms and/or the castings.

Advertise

Introduce folks to your entrepreneurial endeavor.  Invite them to dinner (for a fee). Since they probably would not like to eat worms, serve the next best thing that looks like worms -- spaghetti -- served with garlic bread, salad, and a drink. Use special plates that you design using these kits. Sell your worms after dinner so your guests will take home a bucket or two for their garden or fishing trips.

Make Presentations

More folks would improve thier lawns naturally with worms and their castings if someone explained that this is really not a icky kind of a business.  Learn to explain the science of how worms turn apple pealings into top soil and how wonderful this organic fertilizer/top soil is for lawns and gardens. Use charts and graphs and bring in a bin full of worms to show off your enterprise.  Have plenty of worms and bags of soil and castings to sell at your presentations. Take orders.

Where to Sell

You can sell worms online or to your local bait shop or to gardners who come to your backyard.  There is a market for worms and their castings for all who are interested in helping the environment and improving the soil. Turtles, frogs, fish in ponds, and birds need worms. Set up shop outside your local hardware or garden store.
