Gourd Grower

A chip off the old block

Make money as an entrepreneur working from home selling gourds, seeds, and gourd crafts.  Create bath sets using luffa sponge gourds.

Sell Seeds

You can grow the most beautiful assortment of gourds in your very own backyard garden.  You can order seed packets with an assortment of gourd seeds or packets of one-of-a-kind gourds -- some useful and some just for decorative purposes. Notice the descriptive names in the seeds listed below in the Resources section of this page.  That will give you an idea as to what the gourds can be used for and the creations you can design. Once you get going in your business, you will have enough seeds to sell.  Create cute seed packets to market them.  Sell to stores in town and then expand.

Create Crafts to Sell

from www.allfreecrafts.com/nature/gourd-crafts.shtml

You can create gourd birdhouses, gourd birdfeeders, gourd musical instruments, or gourd toys. Create beautiful decorations by stringing gourds together to hang in trees.  Use a small drill bit to punch a hole through both sides near the top and string them together.  Use a knot to keep them separated and from sliding in to each other.

Some can be used as table decorations, some can be hung near windows, and others can be turned into containers of various sorts. These are especially nifty in the Fall.  Cute the top off so that one looks like a candy dish and fill it with candy.

They make beautiful decorations just all by themselves or with a few twigs around them.  Use one at a time or make a collection of various sizes.

Backyard Bath Gift Sets

Package an all-natural bath set to sell as gifts items. Grow luffa sponge gourds and create bath sponges from these.  Make a botanical soap and potpourri using ideas from our Backyard Botanist Page.  Check out Bamboo towels and night shirts on our Birdscape Landscaper Page. Now, using a large gourd as a gift box, package all of these items together to sell.  In fact, large gourds make excellent gift boxes for any kind of items.

Hold Hobby Workshops to Teach Gourd Painting Art

Teach local classes or go out of town to teach classes. The definition of an expert, remember, is someone from out of town. Teach at local community colleges and for community education classes.  Tole painting is folk art painting on various surfaces such as gourds.

Protection

You should know that breathing the fine dust when cutting gourds can be hazardous to your health.  Breathing the gourd material on the insides of gourds, too, might pose a problem.  Wear high-end protective masks that protect lungs against very fine particles.

Where to sell

You will make lots of examples and then set up a display in your driveway and test the market at garage sales.  You will sell at local shops, garden centers, nurseries, and farmers' market.  You will go to trade shows and sell on the Internet.
