Make money working at home as an expert in lawn care, artificial turf, grass furniture, backyard putting greens, native grass yards, and xeriscaped decorative rock yards.

Front and backyards vary depending upon one's lifestyle and tastes.  You can become an expert in each of the styles listed below and hire yourself out as a consultant in charge of creating beautiful yards for all of the United States and beyond.

1. Maintain Classic Grow and Mow Yards

If you have customers who enjoy working in their yards, mowing, edging, and watering, there are some amazing grasses nowadays.  Many people love the smell of freshly cut grass. Going barefoot through the perfect lawn is especially fun.  Here are some resources for you to consider as you help your customers find the right grass for their yard.  Since they will probably want you to install it, you must learn the installation techniques for fresh sod.  It really is not so difficult.  Make certain that there are no air pockets.

2. Design and Make Grass Furniture

sod sofa

You do the  design:  tables, chairs, ottomons, and rugs (using flowers or crushed colorful gravel for color).  You haul in the dirt, lay out form, put in the sod, water, and get it started.  Your customers are on their own from there. You may have to come back and trim it by hand or a trimmer.  According to the instructions, you will need wafer board (OSB siding) to make the frame along with wooden stakes. After the dirt is filled in, you shape the furniture and cover it with poultry netting to hold its shape. Then you fertilize, add grass, and water Your dog will just love sleeping on this sofa.

3. Install Artificial "Grass Don't Grow" Turf Yards

sample of artificial grass

Grass don't grow so you don't gotta mow. Artificial turf is great for water and time conservation.  The expense can be recovered over time in money saved in upkeep.  It is great for older people and busy people who do not want to maintain a yard. People who are alergic to grass and don't like the noise of mowers and blowers appreciate artificial turf.

There are a few drawbacks.  Some neighbors might not like seeing a bright green yard in the dead of winter.   It also discourages birds from visiting your yard.

 Putting Greens and Dog Runs

Artificial grass for putting greens and dog runs are popular.

 Playgrounds

It is used under playground equipment for looks and easy care.  However, it is not used to cushion falls.

 Minuature Golf Courses

Use artificial turf to create a miniature golf course in your customers' backyards.  Or you can take your show on the road.  Make the golf course portable and set up in parking lots at craft fairs.

Check out the installation steps necessary for installing artificial turf to see if this is something you can do as a business.  Installation varies; this guide is just to give you an idea of what is involved.

4. Install Environmentally Correct Native and Asian Grass Yards

native grasses

Begin to convert your customers' yards to native plants.  Soon their entire yards will be taken over and they will not have to mow again.  Begin by enlarging the beds around the trees and next to the house. Make huge corner beds.  Make beds in the center of the yard.  Now, over time connect all of the flower beds. Birds are attracted to native grasses as they can find cover so put up some birdfeeders and houses.  Myoporium and Korean grass are two kinds of no mow grasses.

5. Create Colorful and Decorative Rock Xeriscaped Yards

rock garden from www.fernlea.com

Although a lush green barefoot lawn is an ideal, to save resources, the rock garden is good idea too.  It combines the best of both worlds.  There are beautiful greenery and colorful flowers, interesting shapes of the rocks, water saving conservation and low maintenance. You are limited only by your imagination.  The combinations of grasses, flowers, and rocks are limitless.

Draw sketches to show your customers what their yard could look like as you convince more and more people to save time and water through creative use of lawn space.

Learn all about ornamental plants that would grow in your area and look nice in rock gardens.  Refer to the many kinds available in the section above.  So many choices, so much beauty.

Because you do not want your garden to look weedy and trashy, prevent weeds by first laying down a weed preventer fabric and then policing the entire area weekly.  A good way to recycle and prevent weeds at the same time is to use newspaper in your garden.  Soak it in water first so that it does not fly away before you can lay a layer of grass clippings and mulch over the top. Just remember that to some people weeds are beautiful, but if your neighborhood association has a different opinion, you must make the weeds look acceptable.

Rocks are used to fill troughs that carry water away from a house.  Check out our page, Water Problem Solver, to see how rocks and plants are used in this specific situation.

So, there you have several ways to make money designing the right yard for your customers. Here's to your planting  a profitable entreprenurial business all your own.
