Leather Tooler

You can put your boots in the oven, but that don't make 'em biscuits.
-- Texas wisdom

leather tooling example from Doc Hayes, naturese.com

Make money working at home as a leather tooler.  Make projects large and small, put together kits, teach tooling, and pass on the western traditions and culture.

Create Leather Tooled Products

Leather tooling is a very relaxing occupation.  Begin by setting up shop on your backyard picnic table.  Start small. Tool belts, luggage, luggage tags, wallets, moccasin, saddles, handbags; make necklaces, bracelets, anklets and hair decorations.

Start small, get lots of practice, then try larger projects:  Tool leather inlays for furniture.

Leather molding involves soaking leather in water. Create vases, wall hangings, flowers, and masks. Try this aspect of leather working.

Pass on the Western Culture and Traditions

This Indian craft is a favorite hobby and summer camp activity.  There is money to be made especially in the more intricate designs which you can create yourself.

Find your special niche.  Maybe an ottoman or wall hanging; Maybe a mirror frame or lampshade.  Try leather bookbinding.

Teach Tooling

You'll want to give demonstrations of your craft and teach others.

Where to Sell Your Products

Your hand-tooled leather pieces can be sold in furniture shops specializing in Western themes. www.texascrazy.com is one such source for selling your creations. Check them out.

Advice

From Bill/Doc

W. A. Hayes
New Mexico Trail Leather at Nature SW
http://naturesw.net/dcleather.htm

"I believe in what I am doing to keep a part of western culture alive through leatherwork and I believe in the principles I state on my site. I am also a college professor and have a strong commitment to education and truly value teachers like you who take the extra step to make education real for their students. If your students want to ask any questions, etc., I'll be glad to respond. My work and site have resulted in some interesting connections. I produced two archery quivers that will be used in a Disney production featuring Fess Parker (who played Daniel Boone and Davy Crocket many years ago), two guitar straps for members of Kenny Chesney's band, a guitar strap for Roni Benise, and most recently a guitar strap for Ranger Doug of the Rider's in the Sky. Business can be more than making money :-)."

"I am a biologist. I have been teaching since the age of 25 and have about 32 years of experience in now. Currently, I teach online biology classes for South University out of Georgia and will be teaching general biology for College of Santa Fe and Anatomy and Physiology I, Microbiology lab, biology for health sciences lab, and biology for teachers (combines biology and how to teach it) for Central New Mexico Community College in the spring. My Ph.D. was in wildlife and fisheries from Texas A & M and my mom grew up in East Texas (so I have strong Texas ties)."
