Natural History Museum Curator

I must study politics and war, that my sons may have the liberty to study mathematics and philosophy, natural history, and naval architecture, in order to give their children a right to study painting, poetry, music, architecture, tapestry, and porcelain.
John Adams  (American 2nd US President (1797-1801), 1735-1826)

Make money working from home with a natural history museum, selling popcorn, lemonade, and cotton candy on the side.

Outdoor Museum Curator

Turn your backyard into a living breathing nature museum. Create an easy to follow path through your yard.  Along the way include benches for your patrons to sit and enjoy sights and sounds of nature.  Clearly label every plant, tree and bit of wildlife.  Make sure not to disturb the wildlife.  Have a label on the ground with an arrow directing the gaze skyward, towards the bird’s nests in the tree tops.  String a barrier around any flowers or plants that regularly attract butterflies or humming birds.

If you enjoy working outdoors you can build your own pond with a stream or small creek.  Add koi or some other type of fish. Include water plants such as water lilies.  Congratulations you have just created a complete and functioning ecosystem. The water will also attract all types of new creatures to your yard. Birds especially will appreciate the drinking water.  And of course the frogs will absolutely love it. Check out our page Swamp Keeper for pond ideas.

If you decided to add the pond, find a local pond home tour group.  This involves people signing up to allow visitors to come and see the pond once every month or so.  When lots of people sign up, it attracts more people to your yard.  It is sort of like driving around to see Christmas lights and decorations. But instead they are interested in looking at ponds. Finding out what others have done, and how, is a great way to get ideas for your own yard.

Display any nature related artwork or leaf collections throughout the yard. You will need wall space along the house to hang your drawings and designs, or art easels for easy placement in the yard. Duplicate your collections and sell them.  Sell your paintings and designs.  Have your own one-person show.

Indoor Museum Curator

Build a little museum in your backyard to house your collections. Charge an admission fee for upkeep of your collections.  Invite the local Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops. Challenge them by covering the labels to see who can identify the most local flora.  Send out invitations and advertise in the newspaper for other youth groups to come visit.

Create a history of your community.  If you live in a small town, this could be a major tourist attraction.

Lemonade Stand and Popcorn Cart Operator

                                                   popcorn and lemonade

This is a great place and time for your Lemonade Stand.  There is more profit if you sell lemonade in conjunction with an event of some kind than just on the street corner.  This is the place.  Add popcorn and drinks to the mix, too. Sell your popcorm flavorings.  You can buy plastic shaker bottles in which to put it to sell. See below.  Give free samples.

Grow and Sell Your Own Popcorn

There is nothing more natural to be growing on a Natural History Museum site than popcorn

Cortés found popcorn in Mexico in 1519. Colonial kids ate popcorn with cream and sugar for breakfast.  Ears of popcorn were found in New Mexco, carbon dated to 5,600 years ago. The Europeans did not know of popcorn.  So, popcorn is a natural to sell and eat at a Natural History Museum.  Sell the seeds you grow,  Sell the popcorn you pop from your seeds.

Add a Cotton Candy Machine

For $2,000 or so, you can pick up a cotton candy machine and sell colorful treats to vistiors.
