Outdoor Entertainer

The show must go on.

Build an Outdoor Movie Theater

ticket

Make money working at home in the entertainment business. There is money to be made in your backyard using your talents and interest in movies.  Create an outdoor theater for fun and profit.  Hang a large white sheet and invest in a projector. If you can afford it, buy one of the new outdoor movie theaters. Set up lawn chairs or make sure everyone invited knows to bring their own.  Sell tickets, invite the whole neighborhood.  Advertise in the local neighborhood newsletter which home movie or TV show will be shown on which night.  Be certain not to break any copyright laws in showing movies for profit.

Hand out flyers to get started and spread the word.

popcorn

Sell popcorn, snacks and drinks with a hefty mark-up just like the real theaters do. You could even set up some mood lighting around the edges of your yard. A string of Christmas lights or tikki torches would work great.  Just enough light so that your guests can find their way to the concession stand.  Sell bottles of your homemade flavorings to sprinkle on top of popcorn.  See our page Natural History Museum Curator for more ideas for seasoning bottles, popcorn cart, cotton candy, and lemonade stands.

Stage Live Shows

Set up a stage on your outdoor deck for live productions of dramas, comedy acts, or one-person shows.  Stage a fashion show and a talent show.  Add some musical groups to the mix.  Charge an entrance fee for each act so you can pay the judges, with some money left over for yourself.  Play the drums, the piano, or the xylophone for fun and for profit.

 Storyteller

mask

Learn how to tell stories.  Pass on the art of storytelling to future generations.  This is a dying art that should not die.  Sometimes the story teller just simply tells the story, sometimes he or she draws in the audience and asks for their help on telling the story, and sometimes the teller uses a flannel board to add visuals to the telling of the story.  You do not have to be an ethnobotanist to tell the wonderful stories about the history of plants and the purposes for which they are used around the world. Below are resources that might help you in storytelling.  Tell the stories of the stars.  How did each get its name?

Professional Clown

jester

Learn to juggle and become a professional clown.  You will need to attend clown school and get a registered name. There is definitely money with one who can clown.  Sell balloons. Twist balloons into animals.  Learn card tricks.

Become a Street Entertainer

Once you learn how to juggle and how to be a mime or a court jester, you can teach these skills to others.  You can make money in this fun hobby and in teaching it, too.

Teach Dance

Teach square dance.  Host square dances in your big back yard.  Teach line dance and anything else:  tango, Mexican hat dance, flemenco, break, swing, highland fling, Spanish. tap, and ballroom.

Children in dance classes need a place to perform -- there are just so many places where they can do it.  Your stage is the answer.

Puppeteer and Magician

Don't forget about puppet shows and magic shows!  Everyone loves these especially families and kids.

Motivational Speaker

Become a motivational speaker.  Find a topic on one of these pages as a cause you can espouse.  If you are a dreamer or a visionary, share it with an audience.  Invite others to speak, too.  Charge a large fee so as to pay those who speak.

Comedy Club

singer

For a fee, of course, have open mic night, audience participation night, or young entertainers practice night. Give everyone a chance to be on stage.  Too many kids are withdrawn and shy.  This will help.

 DJ and Emcee

jukebox

Advertise your services as a DJ.  Get the equipment, the music, and take your services to the party.  Specialize in some field such as karaoke. You have a great booming voice so use it as an emcee for various events.  Make a name for yourself.

Video and Film Maker

clapboard

Make your own movies, write your own script.  Create your own film or video company. Record history for families-- sporting events, births, and weddings.  Record great-grandfather talking about the war or mom describing how to cook.

Talent Agent

Organize a group or groups such as the following.  Act as the talent agent to get bookings. Sign them up all over town.  Do not forget church activities and garden clubs.  Maybe churches have never given a thought to hiring live music or comedy acts, and they may really like it. Some fidlers could really liven up a Wednesday night church service.
