What is Petrified Wood?
Petrified wood is made up of tree trunks, branches, and wood chips that were buried in mud, sand, or volcanic ash hundreds of millions of years ago. Over time it turned into stone. How did this happen? Silica, or silicon, is the second most common element in the crust of the earth. Silica dissolved in the water in which the tree parts were buried and seeped into the cells of the tree parts. The tree parts gradually filled up with silica or silica mixed with other minerals until it turned to stone. The other minerals in the silica mix give the petrified wood its color variations. Iron oxide makes the wood look orange, brown, red, yellow, or rust-colored. Manganese oxide makes the wood look blue, black, purple, or pink. Carbon makes the wood black. Copper, chromium, and cobalt give the wood a green or blue color. Silica makes it turn white or grey.
Because of the beauty of it, some people feel that possessing a piece of petrified wood can help the owner appreciate his or her own uniqueness and special place in the history of the Earth. Capitalize on this notion, create a product, and sell it. Fake Rock Business Opportunities There are some wonderful structures that can be made from fake rock material. Make fake rocks, of course, such as structures for kids to play on, pool covers, and the like. Do some research on this (below) and see if this is the way for you to make money. You could haul these fake rocks all over town to sell them and you won't hurt your back since they aren't so heavy. Fake rocks cover ugly landscaping spots, hide faucets and air condition units, and create beauty in a landscape. Make a Rock Tic-Tac-Toe Game Paint 5 rocks to look like lady bugs and paint 4 rocks to look like June bugs. Buy and paint a square stepping stone to look like a tic-tac-toe game board. Use glow-in-the-dark paint. Set this up permanently on a table in your backyard. Visitors can sit and play while drinking coffee and chatting. Package and sell these outdoor garden games. © Backyard EntrepreneurTM 2007 Link to us. Contact us if you wish to have your site listed here as a resource in Rockhound or related areas.
