Small House Builder

Less is more.

Make money working at home by designing, building, and selling blueprints for small houses.

After many people lost their homes from hurricane Katrina, small houses started beoming popular mainly because they are affordable and give people a home.  They also promote simplicity and a back-to-nature way of living because owners of small houses will spend more time enjoying the outdoors.  If you're interested in taking on a project that's more than simply making crafts, but is still doable, then you should consider building one of these small houses!

Small houses can start at about 100 square feet, but of course can be bigger.  There are plans available on the Internet, so with a little research (see our resources below) and the right materials, you can build these in your backyard.  Then sell it and build another.  This is a great idea for those who love to build, and many aspects, such as installing windows and painting the interior and exterior, can be done together with family members and friends.

This is a great entrepreneurial idea because it's so fun, rewarding, and it can generate a large profit!

With a few architectural tricks you can make a small house feel much larger.  If you build the house vertical instead of horizontal, you will feel as if the house is larger than it really is.  The exercise of going up and down the stairs is good for anyone.

Use lots of windows and skylights.  There is a more open feeling when the entire house is flooded with light.

What's needed in a house anyway?  Not as much as you might think.  A bedroom, closet space, living room, kitchen, and bath.  A screened-in wrap-around porch can provide extra space as part of the house as well.  Instead of a recreation room, owners of small houses can enjoy the great outdoors.  See our page on big back yards for more ideas

The kids' rooms can have a smaller space than the master – just enough for a double bed or bunk beds, a closet, and a chest.

You will need to build a place for the hot water heater, washer and dryer.  Some people stack their washer and dryer.  The hot water heater can also go outside the living space like outside on the back porch.

You might want to become an advocate for the Small House Movement.  This is big-- what with the Green Movement and folks getting just plain tired of the upkeep and expense of the monster houses.

Design, Sell Blueprints, Build Small Houses

Design and plan out different small houses to suit different people's needs.  Sell the small houses that you build.  Build them in your backyard on a trailer so that your customer can just roll it right away.  Or sell blueprints.  This is a worthwhile cause and your creations will truly help out people in need of a home.
