Texas English Linguist

and Culturalist

Language shapes the way we think, and determines what we can think about.--  Benjamin Lee Whorf

map of Texas

Make money from home teaching Texas English and culture to newcomers.  Texas is about entrepreneurs, especially backyard entrepreneurs.  When one talks about business in Texas, one must immediately remember the Grandfather of Texas for inspiration. Moses Austin was first and foremost a business man.  He died before he was able to colonize Texas and that task was left to his son, Stephen F. Austin. Because so many folks in Texas do not know Texas history, the culture, and the language this is where you come in.  From the very beginning, Texas has been about business.  Texans are willing to take risks and to keep trying.  They think big.  We encourage entrepreneurs in Texas to give their business a Texas twist, a Texas theme.

Teach Texas English

Where we come from on the Texas coast, American English is a second language. We speak Texas English at home, but try to speak American English at work. We ask the boss for more "pens", but at home we write with "pins".

Some researchers came into Texas recently to figure out how Texans speak and discovered that urban Texans speak differently from rural Texans. Not so if these are true-blooded Texans. It is just that in the big cities, we speak the language of commerce and business so as to be understood by the Yankees we do business with. We revert right back to Texas English just as soon as we can.

Texas English is spreading like wild fire across the country. You can build a small business around teaching folks how to speak correct Texas English. Soon as the Yankees can understand and speak it, Texas English will replace American English as the language of business and industry.

When we hear of a movement to make English the official language of the United States, we wonder if they mean Texas English.

How to Walk, Talk, Dress, Cook, and Think like a Texan

There is a special culture in Texas that is a blend of all of Texas, from El Paso to Galveston, Brownsville to Amarillo and all points in between. We have a special way of cooking, of eating, dressing, and living. There is an independent way of thinking in Texas that represents all that is good in American democracy. We have our heroes and our villains.

Because this culture must be passed on and because so many new Texans want to learn it, build your business around teaching the Texas culture. Take your show on the road. Write books, make videos, put on demonstrations and fashion shows. Create a newsletter. Teach online courses. Sell language tapes and pronunciation dictionaries.

Sell Texas Games

Package games of horseshoes and washers.  Include instructions.  Create your own games to sell.  Package a deck of cards with a Texas theme with instructions for the games William B. Travis and the early settlers played at San Felipe de Austin.

Sell Ten Gallon Hats

Find some new uses for this Texas symbol.  Decorate as a bed for a doll or a kitten.  Set a pot plant in it.  Keep office supplies in it.  Use the real deal or make out of pottery, wood, or metal.  Check out this wonderful wooden hat:  Chris Ramsey at knot-head.com

Teach Texas Entrepreneurship and Culture with Food

Visit German bakeries in Fredricksburg; attend a Czech festival in Bellville; eat tamales in the Rio Grand Valley on Christmas Eve; eat French toast in Navasota; eat Fritos in Dallas;  drink Dr. Pepper in Dublin;  eat anything with pecans at Corsicana's Collin Street Bakery; eat Blue Bell ice cream in  Brenham;  get salsa in ElPaso; and so forth.  Write a book and teach classes  with all the information you compile.

Build Homes for Real Texans

We believe that Texans should live in houses that reflect their unique history.  Lately, the only choices given to us by builders are ugly mansions that all look the same -- two stories, straight up like a giant ceral box.  We have outlined our true vision of a Texas home. Draw your own designs and build homes for yourself and others reflecting the true nature of Texas.

Other States

Ok.  We know that there are 49 other states in the United States. So teach the history and culture of the one you live in.  Find the legends and heroes and promote them.  Intertwine your state's history into your business. Find your niche.
