Writer Artist Composer

He who works with his hands is a laborer.
He who works with his hands and his head is a craftsman.
He who works with his hands and his head and his heart is an artist.
-- St. Francis of Assisi

      slanted pencil

Make money working as an entrepreneur at home as a writer, artist, and composer.

In the solitude of your big yard, listening to the sounds of nature, you can do your best thinking.  You will be able to compose songs and music; write poetry, literature, and short stories; draw, design, and paint. Breathe the fresh air and clear you mind.  Put your thoughts on paper.

Publish,Sell,and Teach Your Work

Sell and publish your works, then teach others what you know. Sign up to teach at Community Colleges or in the Community Education Program at your local high school.

Mystery Dinner Theater Scripts

Write scripts for murder mystery dinner theater plays .  Or stretch it over an entire murder mystery weekend and sell to bed and breakfast hosts. Get a group together and stage the whole thing for the guests so that the dinner theater or the bed and breakfast hosts don't have to do it.

Rent your Art Work

Your work is needed on a tempory basis for developers' model homes.  Real estate agents needs to make a home look more marketable for an Open House.  Someone who likes to redecorate often and will want to rent your paintings instead of buying them.  Hotels and resturants need to rent your art work.

Make and Sell Dye

Using native plants, make dye the old fashioned way -- in your own kitchen.  Make and sell your products.

Design Menus

Menus make a first impression on hungry diners.  Beautifully designed menus are a must for all ressturants.  They need to be updated and redesigned ever so often.  In this way you will have happy repeat business.

Draw Caricatures

Set up shop where ever crowds gather.  Folks love a funny picture of themselves.  They love to see how others see them.  Use your drawing skills as well as your people skills to find that special aspect of your customer's face.

Paint Wall Murals

Paint murals on walls for churches, schools, office buildings, and resturants. Homowners may want the personal touch.  Create wonderful nature and jungle scenes with the family members incorparated into the art work.

 Fence Art

pencil fence

You can paint a backyard fences for others to look like crayons. Copy the look of a crayon, alternating colors.  Use pencils and rulers.

Yard Art

Set up a metal easel and just leave it.  It is a beautiful piece of art work in and of itself.   It can be the centerpiece of your inspiration.   Weave evergreen vines around it.

Advertise that you are a writer by placing giant pencils in and around your home. Use as business cards. Use a very large dowel rod, cut it to a reasonable length.  Shave one end to a point.  Paint a black pencil led at the tip.  Sand the other end to round the edges to look like an eraser.  Paint a dark pink eraser at this end.  Paint the rest yellow, jagging the edges at the sharpened end.  Use silver duck tape to separate the eraser from the pencil.  Or paint a silver strip around the pencil.  Write "No 2" on the pencil with a permanent marker.  Remember, the pencil is number 2, you are number 1.  Write your name and whatever other information you want to include on the pencil.

 Roof and Chimney Art

Use your roof as a canvas and paint beautiful scenes.  Carve designs into your shingles or attach shapes and designs on top of shingles.

Attach interesting designs to your chimney.  Use life-like figure cut outs like squirrels perched on the edge of the chimney, a roofer with a hammer, a kid with a broom, or two kids sitting at the peak talking.

Create Cards and Guest Books

We know of one who has a  line of all occasion cards with a garden theme we call GardsTM.  You come up with your own line, include post cards in the mix. Have people send you a photo of their house and you create cards for them with a pen and ink drawing of their home. Create beautiful guest books.  Too many people have gotten out of this wonderful tradition.  Folks used to keep a guest book in their entrance hallway and have guests sign it.  Revive this tradition.  It is a terific history of the comings and goings of family and friends.  Create books that car owners can use to keep a record of their new car -- dates and receipts of all repairs and upkeep.  Make on for homeowners.

 Publish Books

Make coloring books for children and adults using plants and nature themes.  Help kids write and publish their books.

Singing Telegrams

musical notes

Make folks happy with your acting, singing, and writing ability. Create songs for every occasion.

Write Business Plans and Résumés

There is a tremendous need for those who can write business plans.  The task seems so daunting that college classes have been designed to help business students write the plans.  There is a need for  business plan consultants.

Job hunters need to make a good first impression with perfectly designed résumés. This is where your writing skills come in handy.

Write Life Stories

Write life stories for families.  These make great gifts to leave the great grand children.  Every family would like to record its life stories, but there is no time. to do it right.  Talking take less time than the writing.  They can tell you the storeis and then you put them on paper.  Interivew family members and friends to add another demension to the story.  The Baby Boomers have stories to tell.

Write a history of your neighborhood, church, school, selected businesses, and influnential and inspirational leaders -- great and small.

Ask to write a column for your newpaper (for a fee) and put the spotlight on teachers, military personnel, social workers, police officers, and others who do not get the attention they deserve.

Teach Writing Skills

A business must project a positive image.  Many are putting up blogs and websites.  The business image will suffer if the writing is not clear and consise.  Because so many business people cannot write well, they hire business writers to teach writing skills.  Along with writing skills teachers, there is a need for teachers of email manners.

Many people are doing self-publishing and need writers to either to teach them to write or proof read their work.

Although you do not have to have a teaching certificate to teach writing skills in the business world, it helps if you have experience teaching writing.  You need a degree in English or journalism.  You need a website to show examples of your work and to advertise your services.

Nature poets can't walk across the backyard without tripping over an epiphany. -- Christian Wiman
